new lines I need a new opening too. I'm bored with the ones I've tried. I've tried kings and queen pawn openings, sokolskys, Grob, Bird, King Charles, Krazy kat, 1.c3, and don't really fancy english, Larsens or knight openings. Anyone have much experience with 1.h4 or 1.a4? There is one opening you have forgot, the best one. 1.f3!! New vistas The Jeffz2002 Opening has recently been discussed on another thread: 1.e4 e5 2.Ke2!? (see my analysis… More: chess online

Kasparov vs X3D Fritz Nov. 11, 13, 16, 18 Kasparov will play against Fritz in NY. (40 moves in 2h, next 20 +1h, 15' + 3''*move after move 60) Kasparov just turned 40, Fritz 12... I think it will be an interesting challenge, even in case of 4 draws. No? When computers will be saiyng "mate in 54" before first move? (www.x3dchess.com/) XRD Fritz I'm afraid it won't be as exciting as human V. human matches. I'll probably watch, but be turned off… More: backgammon online

Are quick draws ever a good thing? I don't think so. However I did agree to a very quick draw two weekends ago in a situation where I didn't feel comfortable. Looking back on the game and the position, I still don't know whether I made a good decision or not. But I think my position could not have been much worse if it was any worse at all, so maybe that's good enough to fight on. Here is the game: white - me VS black - opponent 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5… More: online chess

1.b4 Hi! I'm collecting 1.b4 games, since many years. I'm greatful if you pass such games, played here, to me for publishing at my homepage http://www.algonet.se/~marek and for including of them into my "1.b4 Encyclopaedia". I also invite all of you to participate in my 1.b4 thematic tournaments. Marek b4 is a very BAD move, well, not REALLY bad, but the polish is very vulnerable, so I'd siggest b3 is you really need to push that pawn. 1.b4 is… More: backgammon online

Why am I playing so bad Take a look at my graph, I was going steadily up the ratings, got to about 1480 then took many holidays and a lot of my games timed-out and my rating went down accordingly. Ive now been playing for about a month and I cant beat anyone, I used to dominate most players up to 1300 and edge past players from 1300 to 1400. Now everyone I play seams to be one move ahead of me, has anyone got any ideas for me to get good again.… More: chess history

Conditional Moves (is it just me?) Is it just me, or does anyone else find the conditional move feature offputting when invoked in a game. I'm surpirsed by my own reaction to it, but I feel like it's poor sportmanship. Does anyone else feel that way? i don't know about annoying. Perhaps a little, but it's pratical. The only thing I usually use it for is when I have a forced combination and usually only when mating. Otherwise I like to actually… More: correspondence chess

Any good book? I have been playing for a few years and never opened a chess book before. I have a rating of around 1550 and would like to improve to beyond 2000 if thats even possible. Can anyone recommend a good book to help me with this? Good books... The following will give you a start... Ray Keene "Complete Book of Beginning Chess" Danny King "How to Win at Chess: 10 Golden Rules to Follow" This one might be a bit elementary, judging by your play chess online…

Danish Gambit What do people think about this opening? I have tried it a couple times with some success, but I have a hard time countering it when black. Is there a good way to counter it? Thank you. 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Bc4 cxb2 5.Bxb2 d5! 6.Bxd5 (exd5 and then the bishop cant attack f7 when black gets an easy game.) Nf6 7.Bxf7+ Kxf7 8.Qxd8 Bb4+ winning back the queen. Quotes Maybe starting a topic where we all can type some chess-quotes from famous players ? In particular, I'm searcing a quote about some guy who was talking about playing against God.. He would win with white, but draw with black, or something like that ? I thought it was Fischer who said something like that, but I can't find it anywhere.. “Only the player with the initiative has the right to attack” (Wilhelm Steinitz) “The play chess online…

Checkmate or not Hello, I recently played with black this game game with pianofred. In this Position I generated the conditional move 20 Rf2 Re1+ ... with threefold repetition to save the draw because I had less material. pianofred mean I maybe could checkmate him forces but we both don't know how. Is this a forced checkmate position? Was it right to save the draw with threefold repetition? Greetings Ralf Yes, it is forced checkmate as play chess online…

how to annotate i'm noticing that few annotations are getting star-ratings higher than two, so what deserves a high rating? (this is more a question about annotation in general, rather than the rating process, i think) simple The more interesting a game is, the better the rating. An interesting game and good annotations. Players who read the annotation are trying to improve their chess so good annotations on how to play in certain situations or play chess online…
