I believe Bobby Fischer died on Thursday but the news is only being released today.

He will leave a lasting legacy of brilliancies behind him and can be rightly proud that millions of new players were attracted into Chess due to his exploits over the chessboard.

A tragic knight — The London Chess Classic, a fabulously organized eight-player elite tournament, shaped up as a confrontation between two great chess grandmasters, the top-rated Magnus Carlsen of Norway and the former world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia. By the luck of draw, they met in the first round, and Carlsen won. The Norwegian GM was still in a clear lead on Sunday with four points in five rounds, a full point ahead of Kramnik. U.S. chess champion Hikaru Nakamura drew four games and lost one. The tournament concludes Tuesday. The Carlsen-Kramnik duel looked like a perfectly played game by the Norwegian, who took advantage of Kramnik's stranded knight. "If one piece is ...

A Game Lasts 163 Moves, and That's Not Even a Record — Chess professionals are conditioned to games that take four to five hours and last about 50 moves, but occasionally play lasts much longer and the contest becomes a war of attrition. That is what happened between Nigel Short and Luke McShane of England in the first round of the London Chess Classic, which started on Tuesday. McShane, who had White, got a tiny advantage out of the opening, but Short defended well, and after 60 moves it seemed as if the game would end in a draw. But McShane, 25, persisted and Short, 44, was forced to continue to defend. It took McShane seven hours, and 163 moves, but he finally broke Short and forced him to resign. That ...

Soviet training methods still reign in the chess world — Two decades after the USSR broke up, Soviet training methods remain potent at the chess board. When the field of 128 was reduced to the quarter-finals in the current World Chess Cup, all eight grandmasters remaining had their education from Soviet coaches. The final four-game match now in progress to decide who qualifies for the 2010 candidates is between Ukraine's Ruslan Ponomariov, who won the 2002 World Cup as a teenager, and Boris Gelfand, the 41-year-old top seed. In the semi-finals Ponomariov beat Vlad Malakhov 4-2 while Gelfand eliminated Sergey Karjakin 2-0. In both the semi-final and in the game below the Israeli chess veteran defeated ...

Bennett and King on chess: Carlsen-Nakamura, BNbank Blitz, 2009 — The London Chess Classic, the strongest chess tournament to be held in this country for 25 years, begins today at Olympia. Magnus Carlsen, the brilliant 19-year-old Norwegian, is one of the favourites, but he was dealt a psychological blow when he lost to one of the other participants, US chess champion Hikaru Nakamura, in a blitz tournament in Oslo 10 days ago. Carlsen played the classier chess, but Nakamura proved to be the better hustler. This was the game that turned the match around. Carlsen is threatening to queen the pawn, but Nakamura, with just a few seconds on his clock, found a win. RB: One of the first chess books I owned was Practical Chess Endings by ...

It’s Gelfand vs. Ponomariov for the World Chess Cup — Boris Gelfand of Israel and Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine will meet in the final of the World Chess Cup in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia. Gelfand easily beat Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine in the semifinals, winning his match 2 to 0, while Ponomariov outlasted Vladimir Malakhov of Russia in a playoff to grab the other final spot. Ponomariov actually fell behind in the tie-breaker, losing the first game, but he then came back to win the last three. Gelfand and Ponomariov were more experienced than their semifinal opponents, so their victories were not really a surprise. In fact, at the start of the World Chess Cup, the two were clearly among the favorites. Gelfand was the No. 1 seed, while ...

Bobby Fischer dies in Iceland
18.01.2008 – One of the world's greatest chess geniuses, Bobby Fischer, has died at the age of 64, Icelandic national TV and radio informed today. A spokesman for Fischer, Gardar Sverrisson, said the former world chess champion died in a Reykjavik hospital yesterday. The US-born former world chess player, who became famous around the world for beating the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky in 1972, had been seriously ill for some time. More details to follow soon...

He was the reason for me playing this Royal game.

Soren, you are the 2nd person I've heard that from today. I was playing since 1968, but Bobby's match is also what started me to find out about US Chess Federation and play my first tournament then in 1972.

I wonder how many of us did come to Chess or tournament play because of him? In the USA, it made a Golden Age of Chess here for the next decade following. Our USCF membership hit its highest ever, until that time. By the late 1980's chess was dwindling some in the Midwestern USA and some of our local Swiss tournaments might only bring 8 to 12 players at times. At most 22. But back in the early 70's, I recall playing in a Class D section that had almost that many in just that one class! What a great time for Chess here~! Finally, perhaps the late 90's, American Chess finally reached again the number of USCF members that were seen when Bobby was playing, and surpassed it. But if not for him, and the publicity he generated for the game during the 1972 match ... I don't think that 2nd period of popularity would ever have happened either, imo.
Thanks to him, my hobby game became a lifetime pursuit for me too.

Boy's Life Column

Message:
RJF's column ran for three years--he gave it up in 1970 when he was admitted to the Interzonal in order to devote himself full-time to the pursuit of the World Championship cycle. The annotations and comments were understandable to players from perhaps 1200 and up, and he usually either analyzed one of his own games with a clear strategic plan capped by some cute tactics or a game by a strong junior player of the time like Rogoff.

BTW, my best wishes also go out to my friend Miyoko Watai, Fischer's longtime companion. Watai-sama was formerly secretary of the Japan Chess Association as well as a good and kind friend.

The random style would level the field in my opinion. In other words, make up for RJF's lack of recent opening knowledge/updates. Would of been an interesting venue.

Garry Kasparov statement on the death of Bobby Fischer

With the death of Bobby Fischer chess has lost one of its greatest figures. Fischer’s status as world champion and celebrity came from a charismatic and combative personality matched with unstoppable play. I recall thrilling over the games of his 1972 Reykjavik world championship match against Boris Spassky when I was nine years old. The American had his share of supporters in the USSR even then, and not only for his chess prowess. His outspokenness and individuality also earned him the quiet respect of many of my compatriots.

Fischer’s beautiful chess and his immortal games will stand forever as a central pillar in the history of our game. And the story of the Brooklynite iconoclast’s rise from prodigy to world champion has few peers for drama. Apart from a brief and peculiar reappearance in 1992, Bobby Fischer’s chess career ended in 1972. After conquering the chess Olympus he was unable to find a new target for his power and passion.

Fischer’s relentless energy exhausted everything it touched – the resources of the game itself, his opponents on and off the board, and, sadly, his own mind and body. While we can never entirely separate the deeds from the man, I would prefer to speak of his global achievements instead of his inner tragedies. It is with justice that he spent his final days in Iceland, the site of his greatest triumph. There he has always been loved and seen in the best possible way: as a chessplayer.
