Blitz Chess WorldWide ... I was just surfing today, and ran across a site of C. Gav*** Gavreitas?! Well his name is at the site. And he had a win vs Danny Kopec, who I played a time or two in blitz and was a real scullcrusher! So thought it impressive here. And decided to start a thread re blitz Chess worldwide, since I'll probably be surfing it some more & who knows What will turn up.
Correction: In a previous thread I believe I called GM Walter Browne's organization for blitz the WBCC, but would be WBCA instead. I wonder if he is still running it now? So much to catch up on.

From the game vs Kopec My first fen try
My first fen try

OK my first try failed because: You Must put actual " " Quotation marks around your fen. The first " is right after the = sign. The last goes after everything ... which is after the SIX in this case ... on that second fen line I tried above.

Craig... I think the position is at move 5 - and I'm a little puzzled: did you deliberately place the board from Black's point of view? (Having put 2 Black kings on the diagram at my first try - discovered on rechecking - I can see how you could do it!)
Interesting game. I thought White's attack was pretty good but it just seemed to peter out when T. Gavriel returned the Knight sac. Very fine defence...
I liked Kopec's opening - it is what I played when I encountered the King's Indian for the first time as a schoolboy. Basically I played a QGD against it! Did OK, actually ... won some, lost some...

ionadowman ... No, my placement of WT at the top was not deliberate. Upon further experimentation, it is revealed that which color goes to the top (for the fen string
of fen=r1bqk2r/pppnppbp/5np1/3p2B1/3P4/4PN2/PPPN1PPP/R2QKB1R w KQkq - 1 6 )
depends upon where you put the 2nd Quotation Mark.
Placed between the last R and the w then WT comes out at the bottom. But if it is placed anywhere After the w , then BL comes out at the bottom. Below diagram is
adjusted " to just before the w. {My prior diagram of this I had it after the number 6 at the end of all. But anywhere after the w still puts WT on TOP.}

Not having computer programming skills of the internet variety, I just have to work it out as I go. Some people must find it all much simpler. But I am pleased to still find it intriguing! And Fun.

w KQkq - 1 6

PS// I am using the PGN to FEN converter that nima_tal gave us a hyperlink to in
the GK Forum notice about this new diagram feature.
[Thanks MUCH Nima !]

It's very easy to accidentally flip the board with the FEN. I did the same thing on my first try. Gotta be careful to designate the 'w' and 'b' to make the board display the way you want. And if you're showing an end game or puzzle like I did, it can be quite confusing to determine which way the board is to be played.
But I'm NOT COMPLAINING! I love this new feature. Just gotta be careful to pay attention to what you're doing!
As the old saying goes... garbage in, garbage out...

I see... ...not quite what I thought. Seems I got it 'right' first time (K+N+N vs K thread - check it out!) completely by accident!
(Actually, Craig, I was just curious whether you might have had Black 'nearer the reader' (i.e. at the bottom) because he (T. Gavriel) is the protagonist in the story.)
I like the feature as well: eye catching, and great for chess discussions. Great!

The flipped board... is, I think, because of the way it is coded. It seems to take a standard FEN and always put the side to move on top, instead of always putting white on the bottom and having some kind of side-to-move indicator. I'm guessing that if you want white on bottom you simply have to make sure the FEN is entered with black to move, unless Mike decides to change the code.

Pete Yeppers! I think that's the trick alright. Just tweak the ending 'w' or 'b' in the FEN string to how you want the board to appear. Of course there may be times where you *want* to view it from black's side.... I like the option, but for the default I might vote to have it flipped as I made the same error too and have seen several get confused by that. Or perhaps I'm still missing something myself? At any rate I can review it before I post to see if it's what I want. If not, I can go back and change it!
I sure still really LIKE the new feature though! Another GREAT improvement to the sight.
